Surrounded by greenery and overlooking the valley, the Chiesa di San Procolo (Church of St. Proculus) is a small treasure chest of history and spirituality, just minutes from the center of Monte Vidon Combatte. Standing on a rise of about 250 meters above sea level, in a panoramic and strategic position facing Monte Giberto, it was anciently part of the property of the Farfensi monks, together with the nearby castle of Collina Vecchia.
Its origins date back to the early Christian age (7th-8th century), when it was probably built on the remains of a pre-existing temple, only to be rebuilt in the Romanesque period. Architectural elements in tuff and carved decorations from the 11th century, attributed to the masters Guittonio, Atto and Bernardo, are still visible in the structure.
Over the centuries, it underwent several strucural changes: the older small church was restored and downsized in the 18th century, while in 1940 a new parish was built next to it, which is now closed following recent earthquakes.
The church of St. Proculus, with its simple and authentic charm, is an ideal stop for those who like to combine the exploration of the landscape with the history of the spiritual origins of the Aso Valley.
