Vincenzo Monaldi

Physician, politician and first minister of Italian health care

Among the most distinguished citizens of Monte Vidon Combatte, Vincenzo Monaldi took his medical and civic commitment to the highest national level. Born April 16, 1899, in the hamlet of San Procolo into a family of sharecroppers, he was the sixth of eleven children. After participating as a volunteer in World War I, he graduated in medicine in 1925, specializing in pathophysiology and respiratory diseases, with a focus on tuberculosis.
Author of an internationally renowned scientific treatise, Monaldi was also an active exponent of the Italian People’s Party, becoming mayor of Grottazzolina and, after the war, a senator for the Christian Democrats.
From August 14, 1958, to February 15, 1959, he was the first Minister of Health of the Italian Republic. Monaldi Hospital in Naples, a symbol of his work and dedication to public health, is dedicated to him.

Battistella (Battista Amici)

The brigand of Monte Guidone

A legendary figure of the late 16th century, Battista Amici, known as “Battistella da Monte Guidone,” was one of the most notorious and feared brigands in the Marche region. A daring ringleader, he operated among the castles and countryside of the Fermo area, often against ecclesiastical and civil authorities.
He was part of the gangs of Marco Sciarra, Brandimarte Vagnozzi, and Domenico Pelagallo, who spread terror and rebellion against the established authorities between Valdaso and Fermo.
Battistella is said to have been involved in the killing of three brothers at Monte Vidon Combatte in 1592; after 1594 his trail was lost, fueling the mystery and legend that still surround his name.

Aurelio Rossi

Lawyer, explorer and distinguished son of Monte Vidon Combatte

Born in Rome on January 15, 1898, to parents originally from Monte Vidon Combatte, Aurelio Rossi always kept alive his ties to the land of his ancestors. A volunteer in World War I, he was wounded several times and decorated for military valor for his bravery.
When the conflict ended, he took up the profession of a lawyer, but his curiosity and spirit of adventure led him to devote himself to travel and exploration. In the 1920s, he made numerous expeditions to Africa, documenting distant landscapes and cultures.
In 1931 he published the book “Tra Elefanti e Pigmei” (Among Elephants and Pygmies), which recounted his experiences as an explorer and naturalist. A man of culture and action, Rossi remains in the memory of Monte Vidon Combatte as an example of courage, curiosity and love of knowledge.
